<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This past weekend my
daughter, a friend and I went to the <a href="http://www.quiltfest.com/default.asp">Pacific International QuiltFestival</a>. It was fantastic, overwhelming, too large to absorb in one
day. My daughter took almost 200 photos, she usually takes a photo of
the quilt, then another of the info card; so I have lots of photos to
post. So here are some of the quilts we enjoyed.</span></span><br />

Laugh Quilt blog is hosting a <a href="http://lovelaughquilt.blogspot.com/2013/09/sewing-musuem-linky-party.html">Sewing Museum Link</a> Party. Thought I would
join in the fun. There is lots of <strike>stuff</strike> museum
quality items in my home but I am selecting a few that are dear to my
heart. This first item is what I would grab running out the door in
an emergency, after first pushing my family out the door. Sorry about
the photos, items are framed and I got terrible glare from the glass.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Update: My DH was able to take a photo without the glare from the side.Much better then mine.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This crazy patch
octagon was patched together by my maternal grandmother in 1944-45.
Given to my parents as a wedding gift. My mother loved it but never
did anything with it. She talked about framing it for a long time. I
remember looking at it with my mother when I was young, picking out
favorite stitches. I framed it and it hangs in my dining room. </span></span>

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The octagon is 18”
across. Made of velvets and silks with my grandmothers wonderful
embroidery stitches on top. It's framed with spacers so the glass
does not sit on the item. I also tacked the item to the acid free
backing board so the weight of the item is carried evenly.</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">My Granny was a
crafter, seamstress, tailor, recycler, full of great ideas. I
remember one year we made pillows for my bed. She had cut one round
and one square, along with pieces for piping out of an old velvet
cape. My job was cutting up a bag of old silk stockings into pieces
for the stuffing. I though this was crazy; but these pillow were
wonderful, soft and I loved them.</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Second up is my
button collection from my DH great aunt. When she passed away my MIL
got 2 large boxes with card of buttons. I selected some of the cards.
Remounted the buttons and framed them. They also hang in my dining
room. </span></span>

scraps. I selected many scraps and some yardage to come home with me.

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This is a fun quilt. Fun striped fabric and bright colors. I originally was doing a
simple rail fence design along with the squares between rows, but I
did not like the roosters sideways. Almost pulled out the seam ripper,
but knew the blocks would get stuffed in a <span style="font-size: medium;">box</span>. So I just cut the
seams off. Made more strips of squares and ended with this quilt.</span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Easy quilting. Long
chains of wavy lines leaving some of the puffiness in the quilt. Love
this back. This quilt makes me smile.</span></span><br />

said I was a little bit of a trouble maker. Apparently, I would
always just go do things, not asking permission if I could in
advance. Then my explanation was “You never said I couldn't do it”.
</span></span>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">After doing several
string quilts at different Project Linus workshops I was ready to
stuff the foundation squares in a box and throw it in the back of the
closet. So it was a surprise when after Make a Blanket Day, February
16</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">th</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">,
I came home with dark blue foundation squares to make HST string
blocks. This really was not appealing, so I sewed 1-2 strings on each
side of the block, covering less then half the block and counted it
as done. This was so fast, iron and turn the last edge, sew and NO
squaring up. Just trim the sides. So fast, and happy with the
results. Think I will put a red back on it and it can go to TAPS. The
local Project Linus supports TAPS and tries to send 50+ quilts each
year. TAPS - </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Tragedy

RWB quilts or crocheted blankets are always needed for the “Good

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This past week, I went
to the the monthly Project Linus meeting and came home with a layer
cake kit using the Double Slice Layer Cake pattern from Missouri Star
Quilt Co.

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Yes, again, I thought I would do my own thing, and proceeded with a stack and slash quilt. I
also cut up the fabric for the border and added a few more squares

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I ordered some Girl

over the cookies and a box of fabric scraps last night! Some scraps,
orphan blocks and pieces more then a yard. <span style="font-size: medium;">M</span>y stash was
running low</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">!

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">It is interesting to
see the variety since the Girl Scouts (12-17 years old) were working

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Happy New Year!
Mystery Monday Link up is here for Easy Street and there are some
great quilts and wonderful color combinations. So check them out at
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2013/01/mystery-monday-link-up-jan-7th.html">Quiltville, Bonnie Hunter's blog</a>.</span></span>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">With Bonnie's quick
finish, and my low energy from a winter cold, I skipped most of step
7 and and jumped into step 8. I love how these blocks come together.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Out came the seam
ripper, more then once.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have 9 completed
blocks, strips sewn for 6 more, minus the flying geese. That's right
I'm back to making flying geese. I have enough fat turkeys; but when
Bonnie said “we don't have any more geese to do”, that didn't
apply to me.</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Thinking about using
this for the border:</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I'm very please with
my color choices. I usually work with scrappy, so the solids were
unusual for me but were in my stash. A sign of a great pattern - any
color choice makes a great finish. I haven't seen any Easy Street
that doesn't look great.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Thanks Bonnie for a
great pattern and a fun Mystery. Remember to check out the other
quilts at <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2013/01/mystery-monday-link-up-jan-7th.html">Bonnie Hunter's site</a>.</span></span><br />

<br />
Wishing you good health and happiness in 2013.<br />
<br />
I had a great day sewing away on Easy Street while the DH watched football. I don't remember this being part of the instructions. I had sewed many strips together, this was my first block. Decided it was time to quit.<br />

This is my last guess on Easy Street, Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. Missing is the black squares, have not cut them, but I think they will go in the center of the blocks. I show only 2 designs, but maybe there will be multiples.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBWnd8o1xMMrqna_yuMwo1lpsjlBCkiHwr3-WXDj2Qpjz8SxAcv6JwK8syxXrCGFUVXinirSK6TLoQkQxPeC07yXbDDcM85hJsHYQqxyNs5bpoRlur7nwCUNTaerus1Voye61JHztRe0x/s1600/P1080573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnBWnd8o1xMMrqna_yuMwo1lpsjlBCkiHwr3-WXDj2Qpjz8SxAcv6JwK8syxXrCGFUVXinirSK6TLoQkQxPeC07yXbDDcM85hJsHYQqxyNs5bpoRlur7nwCUNTaerus1Voye61JHztRe0x/s320/P1080573.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Sorry, a little messy since it is not sewn together, and I don't know if it right. BUT it is fun to guess.Elaine Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14605111489532551743noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-315497125509085277.post-87960059850955873062012-12-17T21:00:00.002-08:002012-12-18T09:33:46.050-08:00Easy Street - Step 4<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have half the
units completed for step 4 of Bonnie Hunter's current Mystery Quilt<span style="font-size: medium;"> - Easy Street;</span> and have cut the green squares. Here is a
configuration that I found pleasing, but it is most likely not correct. This is my first mystery and I am really enjoying it.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrc8rj0PfDZS-2XG-7mW6NQCqgZ-qOeF9bPn-61__SBNb3ji9fzorXALpz1U2dCZf-wImMrshsbB0A8dBxdVj0Nvy3d4UFOXwnJgbivxF4nqeuBhafjZB2eVBmwzFVKonQPxADWw_dXTUL/s1600/P1080557.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrc8rj0PfDZS-2XG-7mW6NQCqgZ-qOeF9bPn-61__SBNb3ji9fzorXALpz1U2dCZf-wImMrshsbB0A8dBxdVj0Nvy3d4UFOXwnJgbivxF4nqeuBhafjZB2eVBmwzFVKonQPxADWw_dXTUL/s320/P1080557.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Bonnie must be
having a good laugh at all of us putting the units together for
“guesses” to the mystery quilt when we only are 50% done. I'm laughing with her, it's a hard puzzle when you are missing pieces.<span style="font-size: medium;"> And ...</span> Like
so many others, I didn't even include the 2”x3½” rectangles we cut in
step 2. Where do they go? In the border? I want to <u><b>know</b></u>. Another guess using the rectangles<span style="font-size: medium;"> (with missing parts).</span></span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><u><b>Excitement</b></u>
– a new iron! Well for most people a new iron is not too exciting,
but a quilter, excitement plus, especially when it was $5+ tax.
That's right, $5. My iron choose this week to go on a permanent
vacation, no more heating up. After, 4 years of constant use, dropped
a few times and sharing at sewing events; who can blame it.</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">It came happened at
the right time. I had just received my Birthday gift reward from JC
Penney; $15 off any item $15 or more. All I wanted was an iron that
heated up hot and had different setting, so got the cheapest Sunbeam model,
$20. Paid $5.42.</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">It has been a busy
week and I must start Step 4 of Bonnie Hunter's current mystery
quilt, Easy Street. I figure after step 4 we will have completed
60-70% of the quilt. It's hard to estimate how the quilt will look
since, maybe, we have completed part of the border. Here's part of my
step 1-3</span></span>.<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">I have joined the fun and am participating in the current Bonnie Hunter mystery, Easy Street. I<span style="font-size: small;"> have chosen </span>solids. I love her colors but just don't have the selection. When I started looking at
my bins, the solids jumped out. 4 colors + a background. I think it will end up looking South
Western or Halloween depending on the pattern. Turquoise, Wine, Green,
Orange and Black. Orange as my constant, black as the background<span style="font-size: small;">.</span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">A
friend of my inherited a bag of crumb blocks and passed them on to me
last month. It included incomplete strips and cut squares. Most of
the blocks were made of 4”-5” strips of smaller strips. <span style="font-size: medium;">T</span>he blocks needed to be squared up to 8½”, others just needed a
strip added. Ended up with 20 blocks and left over 4”-5” blocks
which I squared up to 4½” since I planned on adding wide sashing.
Almost done, just need 6 more sashing pieces on the side. Thinking
about adding a wide orange border.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-JUH0DlV9uk2p-6fIn0mXq_6b2zTELTYRMA8X1-UBJA6pzeHyK9dW2oXm9oia4Z1Yt-nCE_yMUmeHPkhAJgk5ml5AtCRij7_5NHqhYyl535PdfEPWAKdywhukJ2NeH0rm075MJyBXfESo/s1600/P1080508.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-JUH0DlV9uk2p-6fIn0mXq_6b2zTELTYRMA8X1-UBJA6pzeHyK9dW2oXm9oia4Z1Yt-nCE_yMUmeHPkhAJgk5ml5AtCRij7_5NHqhYyl535PdfEPWAKdywhukJ2NeH0rm075MJyBXfESo/s320/P1080508.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Funny how I ended up
working on these crumb blocks with Bonnie Hunter working on 2½”
crumb strips, sewing them together for a finished 8” block. </span></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I received 5

increased the blocks size to a finish 7½ “. I also added a few
flower printed fabrics, they seem to soften the plaids and stripes
which seamed so flat alone. </span></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Didn't
make it to the September Project Linus work day but a request for
quilts from a head start program came in last week. They requested 22 boy and
11 girl blankets. The PL <strike>slave driver</strike> coordinator
thought we should make some strip quilts. My machine was in the shop last week,
but I pulled some of my kid friendly fabric and other strips putting
together 3 kits for myself. 48 hours later, my machine was back,
sewing so smooth and I was busy. </span></span>

Laugh Quilt first posted about <a href="http://lovelaughquilt.blogspot.com/2012/08/dump-and-sew.html">Dump and Sew</a> I knew I had a bag of
scraps to use. Several weeks before I had come home from Project
Linus with a bag full of scraps and strips to make string quilts. I
had made 60 blocks and was getting bored and had already started a
few crumb blocks. Out dumped the bag, including the crumb blocks. I sorted a little, taking out the RW&B, and added some triangles. </span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHWYY8Jn93-bjAQKP79yhGAfflQJnvXdG_fSlqjc72HnUkbHXuqxBeqXlBw54p7Eto6sbTiTTJqQnaFKRy1NOw_VWomUCUH6lln-x_29bM2OweKMdlmrFMVEw8hr16aXBoUR9HfK9_sHY/s1600/P1080322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrHWYY8Jn93-bjAQKP79yhGAfflQJnvXdG_fSlqjc72HnUkbHXuqxBeqXlBw54p7Eto6sbTiTTJqQnaFKRy1NOw_VWomUCUH6lln-x_29bM2OweKMdlmrFMVEw8hr16aXBoUR9HfK9_sHY/s320/P1080322.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Crumb blocks are at
the top of the picture.</span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The hardest
challenge of this project was not to cut as much as I normally do.
There were many strips in the bag and I sewed some together, folded,
cut in half, and sewed again. I sat at the machine, sewed, did not
iron and did not use the rotary cutter; two hours later ended up with
14 odd shaped blocks. It actually was very relaxing letting go of rules and letting the
fabric dictate what shape the block was going to end up. This is what
I ended up with after ironing, and squared up the corners:</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Final flimsy:</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Yes, it looks like I
threw in some perfect 16 patch blocks, but this one was made with a
3” and 2 1/2” strips (fungly fabric – lipstick & mascara).
Sew, fold, cut. I think I could make a whole quilt this way.</span></span><br />
